Building Project Starter Checklist

A concise checklist for organising the first conversation about a new building project.

Use this before the next decision
  1. Define the purpose of the project
  2. List the people who will use the building
  3. Record the site location and what is already known about it
  4. State the approximate budget range, even if provisional
  5. Identify the desired timing and any fixed dates
  6. List must-have spaces or functions
  7. List things the project must avoid
  8. Gather title/site/planning information that is already available
  9. Write down the three biggest uncertainties
  10. Define what a successful first stage would achieve
HSD note: This checklist helps organise questions. It does not confirm site conditions, approvals, costs, structural adequacy or legal title. Those matters require appropriate professional investigation.
